It is a little more expensive than Aluminum Sulfate.

Directions for use are the same for both. It can also be used to pre-treat fabric or paper before marbling to ensure that designs transfer clearly.

For Fabric Marbling
Dissolve ¼ cup Alum in one gallon of warm water. Immerse fabric in solution until wet, wring out (do not rinse) and let air dry. Fabric will be ready to marble when dry, and it may be ironed before marbling.

For Paper Marbling
Dissolve ¼ cup of Alum in 1 quart of water. Spray or sponge on the solution to lightly coat the paper. Let dry completely before marbling.

An easy measurement to remember when dyeing with alum, is to just 1 Tbsp per skein. You can cool mordant with alum, by putting the alum and fiber into a bucket and making sure that there is plenty of room and water to move around the fiber and give the water a stir occasionally. Leave the fiber in for at least 24 hours, stirring occasionally. To re-use the mordant liquid, instead of throwing it out, you can just add 50% of the alum that you added the first time, for each skein. Protein/wool fibers or cellulose/plant fibers! How handy!

This mordant contains iron (ferrous), so it should be used for any fiber that you want to darken, as you normally would by adding iron to the dye bath or using an iron after-bath. This has the iron (ferrous) already mixed in. Handy again! Adding iron to your natural dye bath, or using an iron after-bath, is used to turn the color of some natural dyes, to gray or black, or a deeper purple or red, or a dark green, depending no the natural dye being used.

Iron is the basis of all shades of gray and black and provides a little higher light and washfastness than with just aluminum mordants. For gray and black shades, it is recommended that you use this in conjunction with a source of tannins.

It is recommended to use this mordant at 1-3% of the weight of the fiber (WOF) you are dyeing. This Logwood extract easily gives a deep dark purple dye.

Logwood is a red wood tree originated from the Bay of Campeche, in the Southeast of Mexico. It was introduced and widely naturalized in the 18th Century in South America and in West Indies. It was first imported in Europe as a dye matter, shortly after the arrival of the Spanish in Central America. But for many years (from 1581 to 1662), an English law prohibited its use in order to protect the dyes that were already used. Historically it was the basis and indispensable to achieve a true black on cloth, especially mourning clothes. It is currently found in many tropical countries.

Logwood is not as fast as some other natural dyes, but it gives the most beautiful lavenders. cochinchinensis plant in Indonesia. The plant leaves are a natural bio-accumulator of aluminum. The leaves naturally store alum and the fallen leaves can be used and ground into a powder to be used as a plant-based source of alum for natural dyeing.

To mordant with Symplocos, use the amount of Symplocos that equals half the weight of the fiber you are dyeing (50% WOF).

Symplocos is a ground, powdered leaf, so if you are mordanting yarn, you may want to boil the Symplocos in water and then filter it out so you don't have the powdered bits in your yarn.

Boil the Symplocos in soft water for 30 minutes, then cool the water to 104 degrees and then add your yarn or fabric. Heat the solution back up to the simmering point and simmer for an hour. You can then handle the rinsing any way you like, so that you don't shock and felt your wool. Symplocos will have turned your fiber a pale yellow, and this will visually show you that the fiber is mordanted. I read that this yellow color will not influence the final color, but I haven't dyed a lot with Symplocos, so I don't want to say yet that it couldn't influenced it a little.

After mordanting your fiber you can proceed directly to dyeing with it, or you can dry and store it to dye later.

I'll include a sheet with this information on it with your Symplocos order.
buckthorn-bark-dried-whole-natural-plant-dye-for-yarn-protein-dyes-earth-friendly-fiber-wool-silk-mordant-dyeing
Buckthorn Bark Dried Whole Natural Plant Dye for Yarn Protein Dyes Earth Friendly Fiber Wool Silk Mordant Dyeing
Priced and sold by 1oz or 2oz.

This is dried Buckthorn bark sold by the ounce.

The green yarn pictured, had an afterbath of iron to sadden the color, from the yellow, to this olive green.

I will include an information sheet on dyeing with Buckthorn bark.

I ship all my products as quickly as possible.
brazilwood-sappanwood-eastern-brazilwood-wood-ground-whole-natural-plant-dye-for-yarn-protein-dyes-earth-friendly-fiber-wool-silk
Brazilwood Sappanwood - Eastern Brazilwood Wood Ground Whole Natural Plant Dye for Yarn Protein Dyes Earth Friendly Fiber Wool Silk
Priced and sold 1, 2 or 4 oz.

Eastern Brazilwood, also known as Sappanwood, is the heartwood of several species of Caesalpinia trees. I have picked and dried them myself. Black walnuts give tan to dark brown color easily, and blacks when overdyed with indigo.

The black walnut tree is a native tree of eastern North America. The husk produces a brown dye that is a direct dye (substantive dye), which does not need a mordant to be used with it when dyeing protein fibers. Black Walnut can dye protein fibers without the use of any mordant.

Black walnuts contain juglone and tannins, and a mordant should be used when using black walnut to dye cellulose fibers.

Black walnuts are a strong dye source and 20-25% WOF (weight of fiber to be dyed) will give light shades, 50% WOF will give medium shades and 100% WOF will give dark shades of brown. Give the dye bath and the fibers to be dyed, plenty of time in the dye bath if you want to achieve the darkest shades.

On regular, non-superwash wool, you are likely to only receive a tan color from black walnuts. The dark brown yarn in the photos is superwash wool yarn. Superwash wool takes acid or natural dyes more deeply, and so you will get a darker, deeper color if you use superwash wool instead of regular wool. Black walnut is a substantive dye and does not need a mordant to help it dye fibers, but you will likely get a darker color if you mordant the fiber before dyeing with black walnut.

I pick and dry the shells of the black walnuts while they are still green. Regular Madder extract and ground roots contain both alizarin in free form and bound to sugar (Rubythric acid). Free alizarin is not bound to Rubythric acid and gives redder shades, while alizarin bound to rubythric acid gives more orange shades.

I still used a good amount of Madder Extract III to dye the reddest skein in the listing pictures. I put about 2 Tbs of the extract in my dyepot with one 100 gram skein of yarn for the red, and then I got a few beautiful orange/peach/coral exhaust baths afterward. A lot of Madder is needed to dye a strong red. My skeins were pre-mordanted with Alum, but in Jenny Dean's book, Colours from Nature, she mentions that all fibers can be dyed with Madder and just a tannin mordant. However, I've also read that Madder will produce the best red with an alum mordant, and more subtle purplish hues by using an iron mordant in hard water than contains calcium.

Madder prefers hard water, so calcium carbonate, often referred to as 'chalk' by natural dyers, is the principle mineral to create hard water. Cochineal can be dyed on wool without using a mordant, and instead putting a tannin source and a bit of acid in the in the pot as you dye the fibers. A mordant is needed to dye cellulose fibers with cochineal.

Cochineal extract is nice for dyeing a true scarlet red naturally. It is a very potent dye source, and the 2 deeper yarns pictured were dyed with a lot of extract added to the pot, and tin and cream of tartar added later to try to bring the color back to more of a bright red, than deep fuschia. The lighter skein pictured were dyed with the tin and cream tartar added right away to the water, and the pre-mordanted skein was then added, so that the tin and cream of tartar would affect the color on the yarn right away.
